BMI – body mass index (often referred to the English acronym BMI – Body Mass Index) is a generally accepted measure of the ideal weight – is used by the World Health Organization in its statistics.
Body mass index is considered the most practical way to assess nutritional status – just be calculated according to the formula BMI = kg / m², so the weight (in kilograms) divide by height squared (in meters).
For example, if a person is heavy 84 pounds and 176 cm tall, their height squared is 1.76 x 1.76, or 3.0976.
When the body weight is divided with that index (84: 3.0976) given is the body mass index 27.

BMI less than 18.5 is considered malnutrition, while a BMI of 25 to 30 indicates overweight and above 30 obese. Thus, in the example calculations (BMI 27) a person is overweight.
BMI is not a precise measure but approximately
Although BMI is good indicator of nutrition, it is not precise at all, and should be taken as indicative measure. The BMI cannot determine the physical proportion of body fat in relation to muscle and bone mass, and that is the basic criterion for assessing the thickness or thinness.
For example, BMI may be higher in people heavyset, athletes and bodybuilders, but that does not mean that they are fat, but have increased muscle mass.
On the other hand, older people who over the years decreased muscle and bone mass, may be obese with lower BMI score.

In determining obesity is often used and waist. If it is greater than 80 cm in women and 94 cm in men, it is an indication of abdominal obesity.
