Of the growing health concerns faced by people today, obesity and overweight is surely one of the most highly prevalent. People’s unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits make them susceptible not only to weight gain, but also a number of other associated health concerns like diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. In a period where fad diets are gaining ground for their promise of rapid weight loss, GM diet stands out for its promise of improving the health of the gut in addition to aiding weight loss.
GM diet, also known as the General Motors diet is said to have been introduced by General Motors, the American automotive multinational, for the benefit of its employees in the 1980’s. Though the employees of General Motors refer to story of the diet’s origin as an “urban legend”, the results of the 7 day long diet are far too striking to ignore. GM diet can help you lose between 10 to 15 pounds. The regular version of the diet includes beef as a source of protein, but Indians have tweaked the diet to their taste and liking and the outcome is nothing short of marvelous!
Here is the Indian version of the GM diet, spread across 7 days:
DAY 1 – On day one, your diet should only comprise of fruits (except bananas). You are free to enjoy unlimited quantities of fruits until you feel full.
Diet Tip – Ensure you indulge in a wide variety of fruits in your diet to get a healthy punch of nutrients. Stock up on citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits that are rich in immune-boosting vitamin C. Apples and blueberries are high in dietary fiber that helps aid bowel movements. Blueberries are also packed with flavonoids called anthocyanins that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and memory loss. Other fruits you should include in your diet are pineapples, watermelons, peaches and pears. These are natural diuretics that increase frequency of urination and help flush out toxins and excess salts from your body.
DAY 2 – On the second day, you are free to consume an unlimited quantity of vegetables (raw, boiled or baked) throughout the day until you feel full. You must begin your day by eating half a boiled or baked potato to give your body a carbohydrate kick-start.
Diet Tip – Add different colored vegetables to your salad, especially leafy greens like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and spinach as they are powerhouses of essential nutrients like vitamins A and C, calcium, fiber, protein and iron. Iron helps improve the circulation of RBCs that reduces fatigue and improves concentration. Add a dash of pepper, oregano seasoning, lemon juice and spices to improve the flavor of the vegetables. You can also have a mixed vegetable soup for lunch and dinner.
DAY 3 – This day is a combination of day 1 and day 2. As always, there is no restraint on the amount of fruits and vegetables you can consume. Avoid potatoes and bananas.
Diet Tip – Try out interesting salad recipes that include a mix of fruits and vegetables. To add some variety to your plate, make sure you enjoy a few fruits and vegetables that you didn’t eat on the first and second day.
DAY 4 – The 4th day will bear fruits to the hard work and determination of all banana and milk lovers. On this day you can enjoy up to 8 bananas and 4 glasses of milk. If you remain hungry, you can munch on other fruits or vegetables or savor a vegetable soup.
Diet Tip – Bananas are an excellent source of potassium that is essential for regulating fluid volume and normal cell function in the body. It is also rich in fiber. Milk is a great source of calcium that helps improve bone density and aids blood clotting. You can either have milk and bananas individually or blend them into a delicious milkshake, as per your preference.
DAY 5 – Day 5 aims at giving you a power-packed protein punch. The original version of the day 5 diet includes 283 grams of beef. Indians (and other vegetarians) often substitute beef with other protein sources like soy chunks, soybean curd, sprouted lentils and cottage cheese along with 6 tomatoes.
Diet Tip – Proteins are necessary for the formation of the structural component of tissues and they help the body fight wear and tear. You can try exotic recipes using the above mentioned ingredients or stick to a hassle-free, tasty and healthy option of soup. Tomatoes increase your body’s fluid intake that helps flush out uric acid and other harmful toxins. It is also rich in vitamin C that is necessary for the formation of collagen – a structural protein that plumps up the skin, making it look firmer and younger.
DAY 6 – Similar to day 5, the only difference in the day 6 diet is the exclusion of tomatoes. You can continue to eat protein-rich soybean nuggets, cottage cheese and sprouts.
Diet Tip – Make sure to increase your water consumption on this day as you will be missing out on the fluids from tomatoes. By this day, your body will show a significant decrease in weight.
DAY 7 – This is your feast day, especially if you are a hardcore rice eater. Pat yourself on the back for successfully completing the most difficult part and dig into day 7’s delightful options! On this day you can enjoy fresh fruit juice, a cup of brown rice or Indian flat-bread for lunch and fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
Diet Tip – Instead of struggling with plain brown rice, you can add exotic vegetables to the recipe to boost its flavor. Try to avoid high carb fruits and vegetables like bananas, mangoes, potatoes and corn on this day.
Other considerations – Carry a bottle of water with you always to stay hydrated. Dehydration can pull down your energy levels and make you feel fatigued. Try not to indulge in rigorous physical activities over the 7 days. Alcohol and processed drinks are an absolute no-no!
Result – You will be a few pounds lighter, your skin will have a stunning glow and your body will feel more revived and energetic than before!
GM diet is a rapid weight loss program that must not be followed on a regular basis. To sustain your ideal weight in the long run, make sure you don’t resume unhealthy eating habits and stick to a strict workout regimen.
