When you’re pregnant, you’re bound to wonder at various points over nine months: What is she/he doing in there? Is she/he bored? Is she loving that pint of superfudge chunk ice cream I just engulfed? Turns out babies are busy, busy, busy in the womb!
Ultrasound scans offer memorable glimpses of an unborn baby’s progress in utero. Whether they show the little one smiling or resting peacefully, those images are often treasures for the family — and an important look at a growing child’s development. Once just black-and-white blurry shots that doctors had to help moms- and dads-to-be navigate, newer 4D scans are giving an even closer look at what’s happening. And this footage is nothing short of fascinating.
Sander van der Laan’s wife, then pregnant with their now three-year-old son, did a 4D scan to see what their newest kid was up to. While they had successfully done 2D and 3D scans in the past, they weren’t prepared for what they saw in the 4D footage, which showed real-time 3D images of the baby moving.
At first, the baby boy was sleeping, but after the mother got up and moved around a bit, the tiniest van der Laan got more active. “He was rubbing his eyes! And pulling a sad face, probably because he didn’t like to be woken up,” said the father.
And that was only the beginning. Watch more of the extraordinary technology in action above. The baby even sneezes, too!
