Cellulite, the subdermal fat deposits that accumulate especially on hips, thighs and buttocks generally – surprise! – effects more women than men and can be a bane in the warm weather when swimsuits and summer shorts come out of the closet. Cellulite can have a number of underlying issues, including imbalanced hormones, exposure to environmental pollutants, smoking and the build-up of toxins in the body. There are, however, a number of ways to treat this problem naturally, such as including the following items in your diet.
The single best thing that you can do if you are serious about fighting cellulite is to hydrate. Dehydration can lead to an accumulation of toxins in the body and can slow the metabolism and make it very difficult to burn off fat once it has been deposited; it can also make the skin thinner. Drinking enough water throughout the day, however, has just the opposite effect, flushing toxins from the body, increasing the metabolism and plumping up the skin.
One of the reasons that cucumber is such a good weapon in the war on cellulite is that it is mostly water and can help you stay hydrated throughout the day (see the section on water above). It also has the added benefit of being rich in minerals and vitamins which can nourish the skin and support healthy skin function.
Flax seeds are a great way to nourish the skin and decrease cellulite because they are such a good source of essential fatty acids (EFA’s). EFA’s improve the elasticity of the skin, help restore hormonal balance and also provide a wealth of vitamins and minerals that will not only support good skin but overall health as well.
Tomatoes are rich in the antioxidant lycopene, which fights general oxidative damage and, more specifically, will help prevent the breakdown of the collagen that keeps skin firm and youthful-looking. It also promotes skin cell renewal. While it is possible to get lycopene from fresh tomatoes, it is in a much more concentrated form in tomato paste.
Gelatin is one of the best natural sources of collagen, which keeps skin firm and elastic, but it also helps the connective tissues beneath the skin which can help reduce the appearance the cellulite. Gelatin can be had in Jello but there are also many sites on the Web which give healthier recipes for fruit-based desserts that you can make with gelatin to avoid artificial colors or flavors.
So if warm weather is coming and you are dreading the change in wardrobe because of cellulite, try some of the items listed above. They can help you get rid of the cellulite naturally and have you ready for summer in no time!
