On January 25th, 2015, 5-year-old Kycie started complaining of a headache and a sore tummy. Her mom and dad, Jamie and Josh Terry, took her the doctor where she was diagnosed with strep throat and sent home with antibiotics.
The next thing they knew, Kycie was seizing, being flown to Primary Children’s Hospital with blood sugar of 1148. Kycie’s parents had no idea she had Type 1 diabetes, and she was in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Kycie quickly slipped into a coma, and doctors told her parents that she might not survive. Miraculously, Kycie defied the odds and shocked doctors with her progress. She began breathing on her own, and a few months later, returned home.
But Kycie’s amazing story doesn’t end there.
From the beginning, Jamie and Josh Terry have been sharing Kycie’s journey on Facebook. 26,000 people in 45 countries follow the Kisses for Kycie Facebook page.
Along with updates on Kycie’s progress, her parents are also sharing the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes — some of which are easily missed, like extreme thirst and frequent urination. And their messages helped save another little girl’s life.
Shayna Clark started to notice strange symptoms with her two-year-old daughter, Kenzy. Kenzy would soak through diapers at an alarming rate, and one day she woke up from a nap begging for water. Luckily, Shayna had seen Kycie’s story on Facebook, and recognized the possible signs of Type 1 diabetes.
She and her husband tested Kenzy’s blood and it was in the 400s. The doctors quickly diagnosed her with Type 1, and thanks to their quick action, Kenzy didn’t suffer any serious consequences. But without Kycie’s story, things could have been much different.
