Summer fun is always a good idea, but so is skin protection. Conventional sunscreens are never the way to go, so why not use one of these natural oils instead?
The options below are listed in order of their sun protection ability. It is important to mention that the oils are not meant to screen out a majority of the sun’s rays, and should not be considered as an all day alternative, but they can, however, provide a layer of protection without all of the added chemical ingredients.
- Wheat Germ Oil
Wheat germ is a wonderful option when it comes to sun protection. Wheat germ oil is inexpensive and has little to no scent at all. It is an excellent source of vitamin E, which has multiple benefits for the skin. It is a powerful antioxidant and can help prevent or even reverse UV damage.
- Carrot seed oil
Carrot oil is packed full of vitamins and offers a pretty high level of natural sun protection. This oil offers a potential “30” and sometimes even as high as “38” for sun protection.
Oils offering SPF 10 or less
Macadamia Oil SPF 6
Avocado Oil SPF 4-10 sometimes as high as 15
Olive oil 2-8
Shea Butter SPF 3-6
Almond Oil SPF 5
Hemp Seed Oil SPF 6
Jojoba Oil SPF 4
Non-GMO Soybean Oil SPF 10
Coconut oil- SPF 2-8
How To make Homemade Sunscreen
½ Cup Almond oil
4 Tbsp Shea Butter
¼ Cup Coconut oil
3 Tbsp Zinc Oxide
12 drops carrot seed essential oil
12 drops myrrh essential oil
30 drops lavender essential oil
Combine all ingredients except the zinc oxide together in a glass jar. Fill a medium saucepan about 1/3 way with water and place over medium heat. Stir occasionally to incorporate all ingredients. When they are all melted down add in the zinc oxide, stir well, and pour into a jar, tube, or tin that you will use for storage. Use as you would regular sunscreen.
